What’s happening:

The chaos and violence taking place currently in South Africa has been simmering for years due to corruption in state and government run institutions, along with 11 million youth unemployed.

During former President Jacob Zuma’s tenure, his family, together with an alleged Indian crime family, the Guptas, became very rich through looting the state of billions of South African Rand, effectively rendering the nation bankrupt. This corruption became popularly known as "State Capture." In 2018, due to public pressure, the Guptas fled the country and now live in Dubai.

In 2020, current President Cyril Ramaphosa set up the Zondo commission to investigate the State Capture corruption charges. Zuma was brought before the commission but refused to cooperate, claiming that Justice Zondo was prejudiced against him.

A standoff occurred between Zuma supporters and the South African Police force for 7 days until Zuma, at midnight on July 5, handed himself in to begin a jail sentence of 18 months for contempt of court. "Free Zuma" protests organized through social media were quickly taken over by crime syndicates, disgruntled poor, and corrupt members of the South African Police.

Shopping malls and distribution warehouses have been ransacked and torched with no security forces in sight. This has resulted in local communities arming themselves to guard their own businesses and property. Protests turned into thuggery and spilled over into several provinces, but mainly in Durban and Johannesburg. After a long delay, some 25,000 soldiers have been deployed to restore order.

Spiritual Battle:

South Africa has a strong evangelical community, with much positive kingdom influence spreading to other regions of the continent. The recent events have been a severe attack on God’s work here, with evil being unleashed like never before in recent history.

For true believers (of all races) it’s a watershed time now: either to give in to fear and take up arms or to stand on God’s truth and protection. Even now believers from different tribes, skin colors, languages and cultures are uniting together in prayer. God is truly bringing a shift in the nation.

A large faction in the government also holds a very strong anti-Israel stance. This has increased recently and Israel has been labeled an apartheid state.

Special Note:

In 1994, prayer was mobilized internationally for our first democratic election in South Africa. A blanket of grace carried this nation and riveted the eyes of the world upon it. Its first black president, Nelson Mandela, was a man raised by God at that special juncture in history.

Nelson Mandela was hailed as the savior of South Africa, and we became The Rainbow Nation. A certain passivity came upon many of the true believers, resting on the new government. South Africa has a national destiny to bring true racial reconciliation to many ethnic groups across Africa. However, a spiritual void opened and gave place to satanic exploitation of the political situation.

How to Pray:

1. For righteous politicians to emerge who can lead the nation as a whole and not only their supporters.

2. For God’s will and calling for SA to be fulfilled.

3. For leaders within the church to shepherd after God's own heart.

4. That the spirit of radical communism and anti-Israel propaganda not gain an entrenched hold within the nation.

5. For a new wave of revival, evangelism and restoration to come across South Africa.

6. To bind spirits of fear, violence, anger, racism, revenge and corruption.

7. For the gracious love of God to bring us into lasting peace and reconciliation.
