Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere, confirmed that their president, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated this morning. Because of in-fighting, the dissolution of Parliament, the lack of a confirmed Prime Minister, and a lack of trust in governmental leaders, the political situation is fragile. This leadership vacuum opens the doors for gangs and cartel leaders to exert even more control.

We grieve with the Haitian people who have suffered from gang violence and political instability for years. Mass murders, hundreds of kidnappings, violent riots, and protests have disrupted businesses, schools, and daily life. Many churches and organizations have struggled to care for their people in these trying times.

In the past three years, our organization has had our base manager murdered outside our gates, a second base manager and business manager kidnapped and tortured for five days, dozens of robberies, several staff members’ children kidnapped, and the assault of one of our American team members. Although our second base manager and business manager were miraculously released without a ransom being paid, they still suffer from the trauma they endured. Sadly, this is not an uncommon story throughout the country.

People in Haiti are scared, and faith is being tested. In times of darkness, the Light of Jesus shines brightly, but fear can also draw people away from the Truth. Voodoo worship is still prevalent, and the regular practice of voodoo appeals to many people during trying times, but Satan’s hold over the country of Haiti has only resulted in political chaos, extreme poverty, and disease.

It is true that in Haiti, there is much to keep people afraid. The darkness is real both because of a lack of electricity but also because of the deep darkness of Satan. Death and disease seem to stand on every corner, and violence keeps everyone on edge. But as Christians, we fear only one thing. We fear God Almighty. With Him on our side, what can man do to us? There are those who may beat, rob, and even kill, but they are not the ones to fear. We fear the One who has power over life and death and can destroy both soul and body in hell.

The only hope for Haiti is for the people to put their trust in the Truth and Ways of the Lord Jesus Christ. May He use these trying times to turn the hearts of the people to Him.

On this dark day, please pray for:

● The faith and confidence of believers to be strong

● The peace of God to permeate Haiti

● Godly leaders to rise up to bring an end to this turmoil

● God to continue to use His Church to care for the poor
